Apprenticeships: New South Wales

Bricklaying apprenticeships in New South Wales come with many apprentice incentives to assist you while you work as a NSW apprentice. These are available from both the Federal and State Governments and ABBTF. You may also qualify for additional benefits from Centrelink, depending on your individual circumstances.

You may be eligible for the following:

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT - Tools for your Trade Initiative NOW $5,500

For bricklaying apprentices who commenced from 1 January 2010 the Tools for your Trade Initiative is paid in five tax exempt payments totalling $5,500 and is available to a NSW apprentice who is undertaking a Trade Certificate III or IV qualification in a trade occupation listed on the National Skills Shortage list. Bricklaying is listed.

$800 after 3 months   $1,000 after 12 months   $1,000 after 24 months   $1,200 after 36 months   $1,500 after completion   TOTAL $5,500

If you commenced your apprenticeship prior to 1 January 2010, you will be entitled to the original $3,800 plus part of the increase depending on the milestones achieved.  Download Tools For Your Trade Payment Initiative Factsheet.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT - Support for Adult Apprentices

Support for Adult Apprentices aged 25 years and over is available to a NSW Apprentice doing Trade Certificate III or IV in a trade occupation listed on the National Skills Shortage list. Bricklaying is listed. Payment is made to either the employer or the bricklaying apprentice, depending on the award arrangement.

1st Year = $150 per week ($7,800 pa)   2nd Year = $100 per week ($5,200 pa)

ABBTF $250 Apprentice Tool Voucher

A $250 tool voucher for the successful completion of an approved pre-apprenticeship/pre-vocational course in bricklaying/blocklaying is available from ABBTF for apprentices who commenced their training after 30 June 2011.

The apprentice must have completed the three month probationary period of the bricklaying apprenticeship and claims must be received within three months of achieving this probation.  Terms and conditions apply.

STATE GOVERNMENT

$100 Rebate Available on Apprentice's Car Registration

First and second year apprentices can receive a $100 rebate on their car registration.  Apprentices should apply through the RTA, application form is available on the RTA website.  To be eligible for the rebate, the vehicle must be registered in NSW and registered in the name of an eligible apprentice, or jointly with an eligible apprentice.

Travel Concessions

Eligible first, second and third year apprentices may be entitled to a Apprentice Travel Concession Card.  This card entitles holders to concessional travel on all regular route local bus services across NSW and for travel between the holders home, workplace and training address on CityRail services and Sydney and Newsastle Ferry services.  Download application form.

 
Travel and Accommodation Assistance

Apprentices may be eligible for travel and accommodation assistance if they need to travel more than 120 kilometres round trip to attend day or block release training with their registered training organisation.  Assistance for accommodation is $28 per day and the rate for travel is 12 cents per kilometre.  This applies to both public and private transport. Application forms are available on the NSW Government State Training Services website or download here.
