China Proves a Valuable Training Experience for Trystan

I was recently able to arrange a WorldSkills International training experience in China for Australia’s Bricklaying entrant in the world event in Abu Dhabi October, Trystan Sammut. The Chinese competition’s primary purpose was to assist that country in selecting its competitor for the world stage. I cannot stress how valuable this event proved to be as a training opportunity for Trystan.

You never know when you’re going to be put to the test: To have to decide to take responsibility and be accountable in an unpredictable but clearly life-endangered situation needing fast action.

As our apprenticeships industry body, ABBTF is very proud of 17 year old, second year bricklaying apprentice Kyuss Smith, of Gary Pollack Bricklaying, Orange NSW, for stepping up and acting when he did on April 21. He saved a life through his quick thinking and speed when another tradie fell down, and as Kyuss explains was ‘fitting and frothing at the mouth and his eyes rolling back in his head’.

Qld Bricklaying Apprentices – Plan ahead for your Licence

Any apprentice brick and blocklayer in Queensland knows that when you decide to start sub-contracting in your own right, the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) requires under the law that you be licenced to perform your trade. Following your 4 year Apprenticeship you are legally able to become a sub-contractor and given the work opportunities available, you just may want to commence your own business, soon after qualification. It’s therefore a wise move to start preparations early.
