NOTE: Updated Saturday 30th of January 2016
If you’re in Brisbane tomorrow and looking to be entertained with some spectacular speed blocklaying by talented Aussie twin brothers preparing to head off for the annual MCAA, US speed test, head out to our office at Brendale this Saturday! Tony Bishop is hosting for ABBTF and it should be a great day – for details of the address and to RSVP, check here.
Two Qld guys, twins Jack and Pat Sommerfeld, who together have been representing and winning Regional WorldSkills comps since 2013, have paired-up, Jack as the blocklayer and Pat as the tenderer (labourer) for the day, as per the ‘US Fastest Trowel on the Block’ competition rules, to be Australia’s entry in this annual event!
The Speed Test is one of three components of the US ‘Masonry Madness’ industry promotional day and includes bricklayer (‘masons’ in the US) representatives from all over the US plus a few hardy internationals, like our guys.
The comp is in Las Vegas on 3 February but the Aussie launch of our representation is this Saturday at the ABBTF office, where Jack and Pat will take us through their paces with a practice run to officially kick off the Australian Team quest for the title of Fastest Trowel on the block.
“Each contestant’s goal is to complete as much of a 30 foot long wall as possible, using 8″x8″x16″ CMU and the provided mortar in a twenty-minute heat. Contestants must have a high degree of workmanship using normal masonry practices and hand tools” according to the MCAA website.
Both Jack and Pat will be competing in the national WorldSkills Australia event in Melbourne in 2016. For more on the event visit the Masonry Contractors website blog.
