It is always good to see fellow Australians when travelling overseas, but it’s even better when we are supporting our leading apprentice tradesmen and women – our Skillaroos, at such a major event that was WorldSkills in Leipzig, Germany recently.
Our WorldSkills Australian CEO, Mark Callaghan, led his team very well to support our competitors. There were 31 Skillaroos and 1,004 competitors in total at the event from 52 countries. Apart from the Australian WorldSkills staff, there was also the WorldSkills supporters group, being parents and friends of the Skillaroos.
All Australians in all their events were cheered on and supported by the typically rowdy Aussie supporters.
Alan Ramsden, our Aussie bricklayer was well supported. Alan’s dad, Gary, was one of a number of supporters. Our contingent included Troy Everett, Todd Richards, myself and even Queensland bricklaying Andrew Hosking who jumped in to be a bricklaying helper volunteer.
On the final day the Aussie supporters were there to count down the final seconds with Alan striving to add last minute touches to his excellent work.
Wild cheering followed the order to “down trowels!, in recognition of Alan’s great efforts over the four days.
