Quick thinking Apprentice Brickie applies CPR, saving another tradie’s life

Kyuss Smith - Quick thinking Apprentice Brickie

You never know when you’re going to be put to the test: To have to decide to take responsibility and be accountable in an unpredictable but clearly life-endangered situation needing fast action.

As our apprenticeships industry body, ABBTF is very proud of 17 year old, second year bricklaying apprentice Kyuss Smith, of Gary Pollack Bricklaying, Orange NSW, for stepping up and acting when he did on April 21. He saved a life through his quick thinking and speed when another tradie fell down, and as Kyuss explains was ‘fitting and frothing at the mouth and his eyes rolling back in his head’.

Consider what you enjoy and take a good look at the trades

Smiling tradesman gesturing OK

On March 7, there was a valuable news contribution by journalist for The Australian, Andrew Wallace, on the importance of reaching young people with the message that the Trades are a great career choice for the right person. Unfortunately the trades are often dismissed outright in the clamor to get a university place. I’m sharing some of the highlights of Andrew’s article here as it aligns so well to ABBTF’s careers message and just maybe, by shining a light on the topic in this blog I’ll convince you to take another look at our great trade.

HIA Calls for Skills Promotion as Construction Industry Career Choice

David Bare HIA

HIA’s NSW Executive Director, David Bare, recently called for greater effort in promoting and developing career choices in the trades to grow the future construction skill base. If the Government of NSW is serious about maintaining housing supply as the key weapon to fight affordability, it must also acknowledge that developing the workforce to support it is crucial.

Is TAFE SA Tonsley the most inspiring Building Trades campus in Australia?

Become a Bricklayer

When Tonsley campus, Clovelly Park, SA opened in January 2014, ABBTF was later invited to inspect the building and bricklayer training facilities and the team was impressed, to say the least. It’s a modern, open bricklaying centre with the space to work.

Tonsley is arguably the best place to train, based on the new $120 million state-of-the-art facility, on the former Mitsubishi Motors site. The original car manufacturing upper structure was retained overlayed by a modern industrial architectural design for the fit out.

Brickies Can Handle the Heat

Recently we have experienced the true meaning of the term ‘Melbourne Weather’. The extreme temperatures that we have experienced randomly were made all the more uncomfortable as we went from one extreme to another to such a degree that the heat took many by surprise.

Normally this time of year we get the chance to ease into the warmer weather however many bricklayers told me they were caught out by the recent surge of heat because of all the unusual cold conditions we have been experiencing.

HIA has last week reported that New South Wales has widened its lead over Victoria in the latest HIA Housing Scorecard report. The HIA Housing Scorecard ranks each of the eight states and territories based on the performance of their housing markets.
