Brickies Can Handle the Heat

Become a Bricklayer

Recently we have experienced the true meaning of the term ‘Melbourne Weather’. The extreme temperatures that we have experienced randomly were made all the more uncomfortable as we went from one extreme to another to such a degree that the heat took many by surprise.

Normally this time of year we get the chance to ease into the warmer weather however many bricklayers told me they were caught out by the recent surge of heat because of all the unusual cold conditions we have been experiencing.

Beerwah Anzac Memorial 2016 Thumbnail

Originally Mitchell Osborne’s dad had a contract to build an ANZAC memorial at Beerwah but when he was unable to go he called upon his son to help. Mitchell jumped to it and travelled to Queensland from Melbourne along with his own first year bricklaying apprentice Daniel Hocking (pictured below) to have the honour of completing the project.

Mitchell, who has his own business, MJO Bricklaying, was delighted to offer to take Daniel on the trip “He is a great apprentice who can already lay 100 bricks a day yet he only started his apprenticeship in January this year.”

Become a Bricklayer

If an aspiring apprentice asks you to give him a go in an effort to get an apprenticeship in bricklaying, give us a call. We’ll help prepare him or her by putting them through our one week Work Ready Program (WRP), which is held frequently.

The Work Ready Program has had a great amount of positive feedback from contractors. We believe a young person completing this course will be better equipped to start up as a new apprentice.

Vic Bricklaying Apprentices Helped with 50% Cut on Vehicle Rego Cost

Under the newly reinstated Victorian Labor Government’s $26.5 million plan, its great news that trades apprentices here will be eligible for a 50 per cent discount on annual car registration costs. For those paying standard registration for metro Melbourne, this will mean a very significant discount of $378.85 per year. “Eligible trades” to be fully funded under Labor’s plan include: bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians and plumbers.

Apprentices will need to demonstrate that they are among the 15,200 apprentices in Victoria who require a car for their job. Watch out for upcoming details with Vic Roads. There is also an existing very attractive Federal Trade Support Loan available to apprentices.

Trade Support Loans for Apprentices

The Federal Government has replaced the Tools for Your Trade Payments with the “Trade Support Loan” from 1st July 2014 for eligible apprentices doing a Cert III or Cert IV qualification on the National Skills Occupations Shortage List.

Trade Support Loans provide up to $20,000 to assist them with the costs of living and learning while undertaking an apprenticeship. A 20% discount is applied on the amount borrowed when the apprentice successfully completes their apprenticeship. Apprentices are required to repay the loans through the tax system when their repayment income meets the repayment threshold.
