The Western Australia Government has announced increases to the landfill levy effective the January 1, 2015 as part of the 2014/2015 budget.
The current inert rate per tonne for the disposal of construction materials is $8 per tonne. As of the January 1, 2015 the new rate will rise significantly to $40 per tonne and then increase incrementally, through to $70 per tonne as of July 1, 2018. The rise brings the State roughly in line with Victorian and SA rates.
High volume builders will be looking at cost increases in this area that may affect housing prices yet again.
Bricklayers and other trades may be able to alleviate the cost increase by helping to reduce waste where possible.
Using modern tools to cut bricks maximising product use as taught in the Brick and Blocklaying Apprenticeship is one such strategy that can be used to reduce masonry waste.
To assist industry in developing strategies to reduce building waste, the Master Builders Association has put out a Smart Waste Guide for builders, subcontractors and clients in the metropolitan Perth and Peel regions.
