The Masonry Contractors Association of NSW & ACT (MCA) 16th Annual Awards for Brick and Blocklaying excellence took place on Friday, November 7. Once again, the stars of the night were the combined works of the 46 entries submitted over seven categories!
The Awards night was held at Dockside in Cockle Bay and was attended by 250 industry guests. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Geoff Noble, CEO of the Australian Brick & Blocklaying Training Foundation (ABBTF), ongoing platinum sponsors of this major event.
Honoured on the evening were the Apprentices of the Year:
• From Wollongong TAFE – Trent Ryan
• From Newcastle TAFE – Riley Craig, and
• From Guildford TAFE – David Coleiro
Sam Spong, Bricklaying winner of the WorldSkills Australia 2014 competition in Perth in September was also presented with an achievement trophy by the Association. Sam will be being going forward to compete in the WorldSkills International competition in Brazil in 2015.
Also recognised on the night were industry legends Mr John Brady of Austral Bricks and Mr John Wash of Austral Masonry for their 32 and 28 years respectively, of salesmanship to the industry.
The workmanship presented on the evening was once again of the highest quality. It reinforced the continuing innovation and architectural proficiency of brick and block product that is clearly highly competitive and relevant in today’s market, yet also an enduring building staple of centuries past.
Following the Award presentations and with the grins captured in photographs, guests were treated to the hilarious observations of Sydney-based comedian Mick Meredith who entertained the audience with his unique humour and song parodies. All that was left to do after that was dance away the rest of the evening to the Tim Pringle Duo who got the dance floor bopping to some classic rock songs.
MCA thanked ABBTF and other sponsors, acknowledging that the competition and event could not be held without such support.
