The NSW Bricklaying Apprentices of the Year 2017 were announced earlier this month at the Masonry Contractors Australia (MCA) Awards dinner to mark this special event. Individual winners were selected by six of the seven NSW TAFEs and the awards were presented by the MCA and Australian Brick and Blocklayers Training Foundation (ABBTF).

Last week there was another big competition happening in the Australian Brick and Blocklaying apprenticeship world with the 13th biennial Golden Trowel competition held from 15–17 October at TAFE NSW Nirimba in Western Sydney. For the fourth time in the life of the eleven year event, the winning team was Bathurst.

The industry is hugely excited and proud of bricklaying’s Team effort at Abu Dhabi 2017, led by Trystan Sammut, qualified bricklayer from Ballarat, Victoria who took out Bronze in WorldSkills International this week. This follows his win in the Bricklaying competition at WorldSkills Australia.

Last month I had a very inspiring experience. Over three days a group of eight enthusiastic and bright secondary students listened well to my bricklaying training and they applied themselves to a point where by Day 2 they were powering through the task and working like a well-oiled team.

For the second time in succession Nikolas Foster, Apprentice Bricklayer with ABN Training, has won the Gold Medal at his Regional WorldSkills Australia Competition, in South West WA. SW-WA’s event was the second round of Regional WA comps, with the other two WA Regions completed last month.
