HIA economics group have revised their housing forecast (May 2014) which indicates higher levels of current and future residential construction activity than previously anticipated, with 2014 set to achieve almost 27,000 housing starts in WA!

Current building activity is expected to remain at elevated levels relative to recent history with WA driving the national new home recovery particularly in the area of commencements.

The impetus behind the recent strong growth is likely to remain, although this will only be sufficient to hold activity at elevated levels rather than drive further fast growth in the face of capacity constraints (trade availability).

Dean Pearson from the ABBTF said “A significant recovery in apprentice employer confidence has taken place from 2013 that mirrors current residential building activity. Whilst new Bricklaying Apprentice Commencements in WA has been encouraging, more needs to be done to increase the number of trade qualified bricklayers in the market to meet current and future demands”.

“ABBTF in WA calls upon all builders to support tradesman who have capacity to employ or host new bricklaying apprentices as to ensure future trade sustainability for the industry”.

“Some builders are now also providing post apprenticeship training and mentoring to ensure that they stay and grow within those businesses”.
