Results from Perth’s North and South Metropolitan regions which are competing in Bricklaying in Regional WorldSkills Australia, are now available with South West’s competition taking place at Bunbury TAFE on 14 Sept. The standard this year has so far been very good demonstrating once again that we have an excellent talent pool of young Bricklayer apprentices in training in WA.

Australian Bricklaying Champ gets plenty of local support in lead up to International

I visited Trystan Sammut onsite in Ballarat recently to see how preparations were going for the October International WorldSkills event, where he’ll be representing Australia in Bricklaying. Trystan works for Lawler Bricklaying of Ballarat and when we caught up he was working locally, at the Eureka Stadium, home of the VFL Roosters although he can be anywhere in the State, from his home base to Caulfield in Melbourne’s suburbs – where ever he’s needed. Stage one of the $15 million Eureka Stadium enlargement project includes a 5,000-seat grandstand, with the stadium capacity of around 11,000.

Younger Bricklaying Workforce

The bricklaying workforce is increasing and getting younger, as shown on the Graph here. The previous Census in 2011 showed that bricklayers up to the age of 30 had grown by 1,904 or 27.7% in the past five years and 2,871 or 48.7% in the past 10 years.

This is good new for the industry as a growing number of skilled tradesmen are needed to respond to the current high level of building and construction activity on the Eastern Seaboard.
