ABBTF Qld is aware of so many great stories about employers and apprentices in brick and blocklaying. So now, we’re asking you to nominate contenders for this year’s award. Let’s tell the rest of the State what we know: We have some amazing employers and apprentices in brick and blocklaying!

The Queensland Training Awards is the biggest and longest running training sector awards program in the State. The Queensland Training Awards provide individuals and organisations with a unique opportunity to showcase their achievements, best practice and innovation in training.

Nice Way to Wrap Up the 2014 Year – Winners are Grinners

Continuing the run of success following QLD’s strong showing at the WorldSkills competition in September, ABBTF is proud to have sponsored local Bricklaying Apprentice Training Awards announced in recent weeks. The Awards and winners are:

• Bricklaying Award TAFE – Gold Coast – Daniel Hermann
• Bricklaying Award TAFE – Skills Tech (TAFE Qld) – Cory Bolvaran
• The Skills Tech Encouragement Awards went to Mitchell Paterson and William Siut

A Bricklaying Apprentice – I Didn’t See This Coming!

When my son Charlie left school in December 2013 to become an apprentice landscaper I gave him my full support. Charlie had worked onsite with me occasionally when I was bricklaying, during school holidays to earn a little cash. He always remarked though, that he didn’t want to follow in my footsteps as a bricklayer. “I’m going to be a carpenter or landscaper where I can build with timber and use power tools” he said.

QLD Try-A-Trade Student Wins ABBTF’s 2013 Competition

The Try-A-Trade schools program run by ABBTF around the country was the trigger for Tre Lyell-Bevan entering and ultimately winning the 2013 “Shout Your Mates” national competition.
The ‘Become a Bricklayer’ comp, pitched to students, was a game of chance – so Tre’s was the first entry drawn, nationally winning him a mighty $1000 worth of Concert and Sports event gift vouchers of his choosing for 2014. The comp helps ABBTF promote the ‘Become a Bricklayer’ website to students.

North Queensland Supa Trowel – It’s On Again Sept 7-8

Hey guys – it’s on again – the fantastic NQ Supa Trowel challenge in Northern Queensland.

It’s Queensland’s top showcase of the blocklaying trades craftsmanship and is a testament to the speed and skill of the industry workforce. Only those blocklayers who have the skill, confidence and courage to face-off to the industry’s best are invited to compete. This is the contest that proves how important teamwork is in accomplishing a final product.
