Apprenticeships: New South Wales

Bricklaying apprenticeships in New South Wales come with many apprentice incentives to assist you while you work as a NSW apprentice. These are available from both the Federal and State Governments and ABBTF. You may also qualify for additional benefits from Centrelink, depending on your individual circumstances.

You may be eligible for the following:

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT – Apprentice Trade Support Loans

The Federal Government has replace the Tools for Your Trade Payments with Trade Support Loans from 1 July 2014 for eligible Australian Apprentices doing a Certificate III or IV qualification.

Trade Support Loans provide up to $20,000 to assist with the costs of living and learning while undertaking an apprenticeship. A 20% discount is applied on the amount borrowed when the apprentice successfully completes the apprenticeship. Apprentices are required to repay the loans through the tax system when their repayment income meets the repayment threshold.

The loans are flexible to meet the needs of each individual. For instance an apprentice can apply for six months only to buy their tools, they could save up their first year’s payments to buy a second hand vehicle then opt-out of further payments, or they can take the full loan to cover living expenses, such as rent, public transport and phone bills throughout their years of training.

Trade Support Loans are loans paid in instalments totalling:

$20,000 for a four year apprenticeship:
  • Year 1 – Up to $8,000
  • Year 2 – Up to $6,000
  • Year 3 – Up to $4,000
  • Year 4 – Up to $2,000
$18,000 for a three year apprenticeship:
  • Year 1 – Up to $8,000
  • Year 2 – Up to $6,000
  • Year 3 – Up to $4,000
